1990’larda lisedeyken bizler için 50 yıl sonrasını anlatıyor gibi görünen Cesur Yeni Dünya’yı okumuştuk, annemler ise 1960’larda günümüzdeki otoriteryen devletlerde uygulamalarını gördüğümüz 1984’ü okumuşlar. Yağlı, kıvırcık saçlarını sallayarak konuşan düşünürün dediği gibi, “Yolu batı edebiyatından geçen herkes bu meşhur distopyan romanlardan birisini okumuştur.”

Japonya’da bu hissi sürekli hissettim; sanki Japonya’nın ormanı, ağacı, evleri, içkileri, yemekleri, hediye kutuları, sokakları, kartvizitleri, hayvanları, dağları, taşları da insanlar gibi ruh sahibi varlıklar ve insanlar gibi hakettikleri saygıyı görüyorlar. Herhalde Japonya’yı en çok da bu yüzden sevdim.
